I have always used shallots, too!

Teegee, some "potato onions" are clumping members of Allium cepa, like shallots, and some are members of A. fistulosum, with a slightly more "garlicky" flavor.

Sturon may be a bit too big!
I tend to use Shallots for this purpose!
Next season I am going to have a go with some 'Potato Onions' I have been given.
I am led to believe that these are basically a cross between an onion and a shallot i.e. the are round like onions, but form clusters like shallots!
Then once you have a grown them you save some of the crop for the following year, so theoretically I won't have to buy setts anymore!
