Have recently returned to UK after 40 years in Africa. We know nothing about plants or gardening in UK. Have very small garden by the seaside in NW England, mostly have plants in containers, hanging baskets, lawn & shrubs. Need comprehensive gardening book for beginners. Can anyone advise.

I have found that this last two years I have not used any of my garden books because everything I want to know is found on this GOY site .
By reading other peoples questions and the replies,or asking a question if I need to know something,I have found that very knowledgeable people very willingly give you the advice that you are looking for..Welcome back to the UK.

the 'expert' gardening series I find are clear, easy to understand and good pictures, one for each topic and if you need info on specific things try the web( and goy)

I agree Pamq The 'Expert Gardening series by Dr DG Hessayon is a good way to start not expensive and available at garden centres. Just make sure you get the latest edition.

I have written a short blog on gardening books - click on my icon and select the right blog - its not long, and there are only five blogs to choose from. Saves me having to say it all again here - one thing I'd add, if you're container gardening, you'll need something on that too. I've got one called The Contained Garden by Kenneth Becket, David Carr and David Stevens which is very good, but now pretty old. I like it because it tells you what you can grow in pots, how big the pot should be, temperatures the plants need, etc.
