What creature digs holes in gardens up rooting plants. Not cats for sure but could it be squirrels?

This has has only started this summer and is driving me crazy. Have we had an influx of nasty rodents in Hampshire this year?

Could it be badgers? They come and dig small holes in our lawn at night, especially when the weather's been dry, looking for worms.

Squirrels certainly do it on my balcony, in all the pots - also the wood pigeon likes to have a dig around and nip the tops off plants, but if you're talking large holes, it won't be the latter.

could certainly be squirrels as they are hiding food for the autumn/winter. but mice do it too.

Badgers dig up & eat roots...

There were quite a few occasions when I spotted badgers digging in my lawn. They're fun to watch, but I don't have a lawn any more. The only difference between my lawn and the Himalayas, was that the Himalayas had snow, so I eventually dug it up, laid a patio, and sold the lawnmower.
