any tips on the best sort please
have seen lots to choose from
types to put over your shoes roller spikes,ones to make holes
has anyone got any love and hates as I need to sort out my grass before the wet season starts its so so dry

The spiky shoes didn't get a very good score in Gardening Which. I agree with Bamboo; a fork is best, preferably operated by the male of the species!

The shoes were a nightmare - gave me hip ache, and the spikes on all these things don't go deep enough - unlike a garden fork.

Just to add , definitely dont buy one of those hollow tine aerator tools ; murder to use. I have just done areas of my lawn with a garden fork ; so much easier to use.

When Moongrower and I used to go mountain climbing in winter we sore crampons. In summer we used the crampons to aerate the lawn! Confused the neighbours no end but it worked well.
Unless you already have crampons, Moonkins, then I would recommend the fork.

Might need scarifying first, then. I've tried them all - the attachment for the mower, things on my feet, a hand spiker machine thing, but you can't beat a garden fork - stick it in, stand on top of the tines, jump off, wiggle a little, not too much, just enough to pull it out, repeat about 6/9 inches apart all over the lawn - or a foot minimum apart. Thoroughly enjoyable, and much more effective for the lawn I found, though with a big lawn, best done in two or more hits...
