I was given a magnolia stellata for a recent wedding present. it's quite small around 1-2 feet high. When should i pot it into a larger pot and is there any special soil requirements?

Now would be fine to re-pot, especially as it's so small it will transfer easily and as it's presumably in a pot already, there should be minimal root disturbance (something Magnolia's dislike).
The compost you could use is any multi-purpose but a good one would also include some loam. John Innes no3 would be fine.
