Why won't my tree fern fronds open?

Hello
I have 2 tree ferns, which have been happy for the last 4 years or so. This year the larger one has not done too well - it is pushing up fronds, but they don't open. One frond is blackened, but there is no frost, sun or wind affecting them. The other fern is thriving.
Any ideas? I don't want to lose our precious fern!
thanks, Tish

I would say water. Have you kept the crown well watered Tishy? Not sure where you are, but here in the UK it's been a relatively dry summer (compared to previous years!) and I've had to water mine daily.....
