It looks like a Japanese anemone to me.

I agree Drc, it looks like her !

Certainly looks that way to me too.

It is in a corner beside the compost heaps and has had slabs put down on it, weed killer sprayed on it, I've pulled it up by hand, I don't want to go on as you might think I'm a nasty piece of work but why hasn't it died? ? ?
I'm scared of it now! ! !

it has very good underground stems. . I love it as it is good in shade and a really long flowering plant. dont be scared just hack it back to keep it in check. it took me years to get mine established :o)

Thanks SBG, It's really in the wrong place if I want to keep it but should I be putting it in an open border?

No, not necessarily Ian.

I've planted 2 in the front garden and have one that's appeared from nowhere in my back garden.
It's managed to survive behind a row of mature shrubs and it's popped its head over the top/back of them all !!!

It can stay though, it adds some late colour there !

Thanks Louise. :~))

You would find it very difficult to move, Ian - if not impossible. Its roots are like parsnips only much longer, and they break, so transplanting it would probably kill it.

Thanks Spritz, I suppose it will have to stay where it is then. :~))

Japanese Anemones are a useful plant in that they'll grow even in shady dry conditions and they flower late too. My favorite variety is Queen Charlotte but I never see it in GC's any more.

While on this subject, does anyone know the difference between the white Anemone and Rubus. I have both and I'm blessed if I can tell one from the other.

Thanks for that Heron, and welcome to GoY. you don't have to be ............ Actually you probably do need to be mad to be here but it is good fun! Lol ;~))

I am surprised, Heron - which Rubus is it? They have prickly stems, which Jap, anemones don't.

I saw Queen Charlotte only yesterday at a Nursery - she's still available.

I had a terrible job getting rid of these from my last garden, they spread all over my neighbours garden too! I hate to say it but, depending on your soil,.........you may have another 'thug' to deal with! :o((( It's certainly putting up a good fight so far!!
I should add that mine were the pink variety so maybe these aren't so bad. :o)

PS Ian, there's another question posted yesterday about how to stop them growing through tarmac!!!

30 Sep, 2009

Wha ? ? ? ? ?
My soil is a very light sand !
I think I had better keep a very good eye on it! ! !

Oh dear I have wanted an Anemone for ages after seeing them growing in lots of gardens when I am on my walks. Now I am having second thoughts if their habit is to take over as my small garden just isn't suitable. Is it possible to grow the plant in a container to keep it under control - or would it break out ? LOL Love Sue x

I have planted 2 pink and one white this summer Grannysue go for it.

30 Sep, 2009

Thanks Drc I will but plant in a container just to make sure:~)))

There are small ones, that don't act like thugs! I have a double pink one - it's very well-behaved.
Just don't go for very tall ones! Yes, my thugs are pink and single. They grow to about 6' tall.

How do you keep your under control Spritz? I can't imagine you letting anything get out of control.

30 Sep, 2009

THanks Spritz I am even more determind to get a plant now. We just might be heading for garden centre tomorrow. Not a chore LOL Love Sue

I have found the variety 'Whirlwind' not so invasive as the others. It has double white flowers

30 Sep, 2009

They were out of control when we got here, Ian! I've been removing some each year - and this week I've already dug out 4 clumps of them.
I will NOT be defeated!

All the ones in front of my obelisk are going.............

30 Sep, 2009

Good on ya girl. I wouldn't like to get on the wrong side of your borders ............ Lol ;~))

30 Sep, 2009

Well, when I put the obelisk in, and planted two Clematis and a rose on it, I expected to be able to admire them! But by the late summer, the thugs are so tall that I can only see the top of the obelisk poking out of the jungle!

Fork ahoy! In I go! Chop, dig, hack, more dig. I WILL win!!
