Laying a lawn (seed)

United Kingdom

We have a patch of earth to the side of our lawn which we want to grass using seed. My husband has dug it over and removed all stones, weeds etc. We are not sure what to do next, do we need to add anything to the soil?

The ground should be moist, dress with a layer of fine compost, (well rotted). Firm down with your feet. Rake over lightly, sow your seed.

If you've not got fine compost, as DocBob recommends, use multi purpose potting compost, as long as its not too lumpy, thin layer, chuck the seed on, put enough for the birds to eat as well! Otherwise you can use a thin layer of silver or washed sand and put the seed on that.

How do I say thanks?
