Do I need to protect my small tree fern over winter?

We had a tree fern for a couple of winters and wrapped it in fleece. The third winter we didn't protect it and it died :-( !

I've just wrapped mine up for the winter...same as spritz said, except dry leaves in the top will do the same job as the straw.....

I always cut the fronds off my tree ferns and put some of them over the crown before thickly fleecing them.
However, I have recently read that it is best if you leave the fronds on and add your protection to the crown and around the base of the fronds. This will be more difficult to fleece but I am going to give it ago as it is said to be better for the plant. You then remove the old fronds in the spring if they have died.

I reckon so, yes! I don't grow them, but my friend does, and she double-fleeces hers with straw in the top as well as inside the fleece.
