That looks like Lavatera (Mallow) to me, but I can't tell if its the shrubby kind which will come back next year, or the annual kind.

I 'thought' Lavatera Bamboo but didn't want to stick my neck out... perhaps the better pix. will help

Don't blame you for not wanting to stick your neck out - I'm always doing it and getting my head chopped off...;-)))

Exactly, I feel as if I have to hedge every statement with 'I think this is' or 'In my opinion it looks like xyz'. I know I don't always get it right and I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong but there are ways and ways.

Well, I'll say that it looks like Lavatera to me too. :o)
But, it would help to see a closer pic.

It could be a Lavatera similar to Silver Cup as it was easy from seed, in which case it is an annual and you will need to save some seed for next year.

In for a penny! Moongrower know just what you mean I learn a lot from the questions and so what if I get it wrong - get told soon enough but I dont bother to reply and fuel their fire. My first thought was a mallow too
