Rhubarb bush

Minnesota, United States

I have never had a garden before and we just bought a house that has a rhubarb bush in the back. The bush is beautiful and big. We were wondering when to cut it and how far to cut it down so that more keeps producing still this summer... Please help us...

have you picked any of the stalks yet? The only thing you need to cut off is the flower head. Don't let it go to seed. It will continue to produce stalks as long as you keep harvesting. How old are the plants?...Third year is the best harvest. On a young plant don't harvest any stalks until they are about an inch across the flat side. (The stalks are D shaped) Just so you know...the leaves are poisonous. Don't eat them, or feed them to animals or compost them. Rhubarb loves deep rich soil so give it plenty of composted manure and humus. Enjoy !! Strawberry Rhubarb Pie...Rhubarb crumble...mmmm. what a treat.

I am unsure of how old the plant is. My husband actually cut the rhubarb off about an inch away from the soil and has washed them. I believe he is going to freeze them. They are pretty red so I don't know if they are ripe enough to eat yet. Since he has cut them will they continue to grow through the rest of the summer?

Sounds ok... but nature has put a littlel hinge on the bottom of each stalk..a little pressure will bring it away cleanly from the root. If you cut them and you leave some of the stalk in place you may be inviting pests to check out the stubs. Rhubarb is ready to eat when the stalks fatten...some varieties of Rhubarb are actually mostly green so ripeness is not as much a factor as is size. Yes, they should continue to grow as long as he removes the stubs of the stalks from the root...
Don't forget to be careful with the leaves.

Best and usual time is in early spring.. If you have a greenhouse you can pot it up and overwinter to plant out in a well dug, compost rich hole in March or April in your climate...here in N.A. I have to wait til May..
