I have recently been given a plant that grows very well in Penzance Cornwall called a TIPOCHENA. Not sure about the spelling but it has medium green pointed leaves with pink buds and purple/lilac flowers. I think it is quite a delicate plant and hope that it will survive in our garden in Surrey. Your advice on how to care for it would be very welcome. Many thanks for all your help.

I think you are talking about Tibouchina urvilleana. Previously known as Tibouchina semidecandra, Tibouchina urvilleana (Melastomataceae family) comes from Brazil and needs greenhouse conditions in the UK. It is also known as the Princess or Purple Glory. I have one which I have brought indoors, I personally wouldn't chance the outdoor conditions over Winter.
It can get very leggy and needs pruning otherwise it looks untidy. Mine is sick at the moment and I think I have lost it :(
