I have just received a garrya elliptica thar I ordered on the internet. It is about a metre high and has a cane holding the stems, how long before I either take the cane out or cut the stems free.I know it is a dumb question but I am a beginner to this great hobby.

i would gently remove it as it may have only been put there for support during transport. see how the stems 'sit' if they look ok then they should be fine. if they are very 'weepy' then i might be tempted to restake it.
I am sure if i am wrong ohers will advise you correctly.

and it is not a dumb question. the only dumb thing is if you dont ask :o)

This is what I do with new shrubs. I cut the shrub free but leave the cane in place. I would then support the shrub, tying it loosely to the cane with soft twine in a figure of eight (ie loop the twine round the cane, cross the two ends, then loop it round the shrub and tie loosely with a reef knot). When the shrub is growing well and able to support itself, I cut the twine and remove the cane
