I am not a plant person and never had one that has lasted over a week, however I received an orchid from a friend and it lasted about 10 weeks and now its all starting to wilt and wither, i have lost all the flowers and the green leaves, i have cut back the stem as per advice on here. What have i done wrong and how can i save it, will the green leaves which have fallen off grow back. I am looking for some really simple idiot guide help and advice would be very much apprecaited.

I am very sorry - but that looks like a very dead orchid to me. If all the leaves have gone, I don't think there's any hope for it.

I wrote a blog on Orchid care in October. If you want to read it, click on my 'dog', then on the blog list for 'October 2009' and you'll find it.

Looking at your photo - I'm wondering if you repotted your orchid in the wrong compost - they have to be in special orchid compost, which is available from Garden Centres. It shouldn't have needed repottting, though.

you may find there is some dormant structure under the compost but I tend to agree with spritz that you may have lost it. knock the contents ot of the pot and see if you have anything left of the plant. then re pot in orchid compost.
fingers crossed.

I think you can bin that one. I notice a large radiator in your photo, if it was near that it wouldn't be very happy. Orchids like a nice cool even temperature Ifind. Mine last for 6 to 7 months, when the folwers drop off I cut the stem to a low node and Hey Presto on a few months they grow another shoot and flower. After a few years I do replace them. You will see some photos on my site.

I find neglect works well with orchids they last for months and months and as you say wyeboy they come back with more shoots later on
I dont think they like to be over watered I dunk mine over night approx once a month
and feed it now and again and have never repotted any yet some I have had for years and the are getting bigger and bigger, and more and more flowers each year :)
This is what I do but I am no orchid specialist!!
you should google david steele orchids he has some beauties I am sure he will have a website
