Any ideas why my leeks have done so badly this year? Planted last June and by September (as my wife then wrote) had bolted. Have now lifted a soggy mass of rotten, mildew crop. It's not through lack of water as we've been blessed with an enormous amount very regularly since June.

Whilst all plants like water very few are happy sitting in sodden soil for any length of time. You could have onion white rot take a look at the info on the RHS site http://www.rhs.org.uk/Gardening/Grow-Your-Own/Veg-A-to-Z/Leeks

Maybe the variety you sowed is not suitable for your soil. I have always found 'Musselburgh' grows well on Limestone soil, so stick to that.
