Sarcococca id please.
When I bought this shrub many years ago it was just named as Sarcococca. Today for the first time ever I have been able to smell it. I alsonoticed a bright red ripe berry. So what is it as the RHS book says it will have black berries? The brown twig infront of the berry is from the overhead tree. I didnt notice it when I took the photo.

The RHS book is, of necessity, very selective. Wiki describes a few species and says that the berries (drupes) of the genus can be either red or black.
On the Paghat Garden site I found that Saracococca ruscifolia (Fragrant Sweetbox) has drupes that ripen to blood red in autumn.
I have not come across this before but it looks an interesting genus. We will have to consider one for our own garden.

Thats my problem BA. Would you say the fruit was blood red? My RHS entry for S. ruscifolia says creamy flowers in winter [yes right so far] followed by deep red fruits, are these deep red?

Its a happy thing in the shade too.
