Hi NP and hope you had a good xmas too.
Mistle-toe is a hemi-parasite on many tree species, apple, oak alder and elder too. Dont know about acers though. sadly i dont have any berries. It is something i would love to grow too.
They are partly parasitic and eventually put their roots through into the phloem of the host tree and gain most of their food that way. But it does photosynthesise a bit.
Hope you have luck in getting some berries.
best wishes for 2010 too.

Hope you had a good Christmas Np. Now is a good time to try and get some berries by asking friends and neighbours if they had mistletoe this Christmas and to save it for you when they take the decorations down. I understand that you push the seed just beneath the bark and hope.
Merry Christmas to you also, Seaburngirl. I thought that mistletoe only grew on apple trees. Maybe that came about because it used to grown commercially in the Kentish apple orchards?
Good luck, Np.

Mistletoe is associated with plant lore, the reason why it grows on another tree. Once a large tree with a large trunk was cut down for the Saviours Cross and thereafter had to be dependant on other trees. Mistletoe Viscum Album is the main one growing in the UK. Trees on which Mistletoe grows are Apple, Lime, Maple, Poplar, Willow and Hawthorn.Occasionally on Pear, Plum, Cotoneaster, Rose, Whitebeam, Horse Chestnut and various Conifers. Sow the seeds by rubbing fresh berries in crevaces or clefts between branches. You need both male and female flowers to obtain berries. Leigh, Acers are a relative of Maple, so you could be successful. I can't promise, but I will have a look around and try and find you some.

Happy New Year Np....:o) There was a prog on the telly just before Xmas about Mistletoe and yes it was growing in an orchard of I think Apple Trees....so wouldn't know about your Acer.....apparently it's name derives from the fact that Mistle Thrushes used to carry the berries squashed on their feet or "toes" and alight in the fruit trees, where the berries would take root........
