In the UK Calistephos, or China asters, are germinated at 61deg f in early spring, or where you want them to flower in late spring, and is an annual which only flowers once, and is then thrown on the compost heap, is it possible that your temperatures are too high for them?.
In the UK they are only half hardy, but I don't think that would concern you where you are, Derek.
