I have a Japanese Azalea which has been in the ground for 6 years, it has outgrown the space, can I dig it up or will it be too deep rooted.

I would say go for it too. Dig as big a rootball as you can manage. Have the new site prepared ready to pop it in.

Thanks very much, I would hate to lose it, but didn't just want to dig it and and let it die, like you mine was a gift from a dear friend

My friend gave me one years ago that had to come out when she did garden alterations. I'm sure it was older than that and it never even blinked. After six years in Stafford I moved it again to Wales and it is still going strong, so I would say Go for it!
