hi, i planted two pieris, different varieties about two years back, hoping to have an uprright small specimen tree. however they have hardly grown at all and have instead grown outwards from the base - what has gone wrong?

You might wait until they have reached four or five feet (will take some time) and then cut off all but the stem you want to be the main one. It will probably be rather bent, (Japanese effect?) and will sprout again on the lower part but you would just have to keep removing the shoots. I have one that's about 20 years old that I'm sure this would work for. It would have been big enough to try it about 10 years ago, so just be patient! No guarantees though - just a suggestion.

Probably nothing wrong, Rosco, Pieris are shrubs (rounded bushes) and not trees.
