I've just received some Eryngium Blue steel bareroot plants in the post. Does anyone have any advice on growing from bareroot? Should I soak them overnight as I have read on some websites? Should they be planted out now (in Newcastle upon Tyne) or potted and grown on for a while? Many thanks in advance!

If I get any bare root plants, I usually pot them up first and plant out later, I just think it gives them a better start, and as paul says, keep them in a cold frame, don't let them get soft, and need hardening off, Derek.

Eryngium are seaside plants that do best in free draining soil in full sun. I would only soak for an hour or so or plant out immediately.

I usually soak if they look dry.Ideally plant out direct but , if you're likely to have a frost then pot them first.I had some Eryngium arrive winter last year and I potted them up and kept in the cold frame till spring!
