Hi thanks for all the replies re the birds. The photo was taken in the summer at West bay. Dorset. Glad I know what they are now.

So Jonathan was right, it was in Dorset, well done Jonathan! Bird ID is quite complicated I think, because of the juvenile phase and then the difference (often quite marked) between male and female birds.
