We have lots of potatoes that we have been storing, most of them are now sprouting even though stored in the cold and dark (an old freezer). Is there any reason why we can't plant them for this year's crop rather than buying seed potatoes? The varieties are red and maris piper.

I agree with Cliffo not a much better to plant new seed potatoes. For example there might just be blight in one of them and you have not noticed... Our tatties are still fine no sprouts but when they do bird feed.

you can plant them but it is not recomended ,to use your own sets ,you could get a good crop, and you could get mostly groth in the plant rather than the crop, and watch out for potato tomato, they are poisness ,allthough the potatos will be allright,.what ever you do only do it once you will not get away with it twice.
