when should I prune a fig tree?
And where would you make the cut-above a joint?
How much do you cut off?
Any help would be appreciated as I do not want to kill it.

I would have thought the sap would already have risen by now... This is the RHS advice for growing and pruning

Shaping the tree is late autumn work, pruning for fruit is late summer work when the new growths are tip-pruned to encourage fruiting spurs

You want to do it before the sap begins to rise, otherwise it gets real messy and sticky.
