Hi
I am wondering,if I prune my herbs ie thyme and oregano just prior to winter, would I need new plants or will they grow back for the next season?

hi Esivory my mum cuts an dries both of these and mint sage and lemon balm for use in the winter.as sarraceniac says if you cut what you need to use thats great but mum gives them a quick haircut in autumn if she's not used enough.we are in england and temperatures drop low both the plants have done well and they have to put up with a lot of wind.hope this helps.

thanks heaps for your assistance. I am in Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory. We have extremes from say - 7 to 40 degrees in anyone year . So hopefully they will survive once we prune them. We do use them in our cooking , much better than store bought dry herbs! But we have not been able to use as much as we have grown.
thank you again
cheers

Hi Esivory and welcome to GoY. The 'cut and come again' herbs like oregano and thyme do regrow but can I ask you, do you not use them as herbs? If you do, every time you cut a bunch you are effectively pruning them. You don't say where you are in Aus but unless you are somewhere very cold like the top of the Blue Mountains they can be used all year but won't put on new sprigs until next summer.
