Hi, whist removing an old rotten tree trunk in the garden today we came across half a dozen of these very large grubs from the depths of the internal trunk.
Any ideas as to what they may be please?
Just to say that the trunk and the family within have been relocated
Many thanks, John

If they're in rotten tree trunk it's possible they're stag beetle larvae (see next question for a coincidence). Chafer grubs look very similar but will be in the grass, usually on decimated lawns! Stag beetle, and lesser stag beetle grubs feed on rotting wood which is that point between being dead and rotted. A good way to encourage the adults to use the garden is to half bury large hardwood logs so that moisture from the ground speeds the decaying process. Badgers will seek out such fare, though, so be aware. The stag beetle grubs will be approx. 8 - 10cm long when just about to pupate (after about 3 years feeding!). Chafer grubs, although chunky, are 4cm or so

Well the actual picture I posted of the stag beetle was found in the same area, so that makes sense.
