Agree with Bulbaholic...would also add that in my experience Japanese maples are not the easiest things to transplant at the best of times.

If the acer is 'well established' then it will have a pretty extensive root system. The pot for such a tree would be very large, you would be unlikely to be able to move it. I would recommend leaving it in the ground.
