But the three classics in my opinion are ornamental grasses, Japanese maples, and heathers, of coarse there are many other plants that work well, depends on what you really want to achieve, generally speaking you want plants that will look good for most of the year, weather it's in the form of flowers, foliage, or stems.

They can look good in scree gardens or rockeries too.
