Does anyone know if Astrantia will grow well in pots? I know ideally they would prefer the ground but just wondered if anyone has had any success with them in pots?

You could possible get away with it for the first year, I have 3 new ones growing in pots but I shall plant them out later when there a bit bigger. They do need alot of room to spread there roots spread out. Good luck give it a try....

Yes they do very well, i have them in pots at the moment and their looking great, just coming into flower, i have the ruby coloured one growing, two points to consider one divide it every couple of years or so and compared to all the other perennials i have in pots then this one can flag a little if short on water, so water well.

I have one in a pot but it's only just coming into leaf whereas the ones in the ground are well away. Mind you, it's only the second year for the one in a pot and I'm hoping it will be better than last year. Julien might be growing his in better conditions than mine. They are in ordinary multi-purpose peat-free. I put lots of things in pots due to lack of space in the ground but also move them a lot until they seem happy. i didn't know that they need a lot of room to spread roots so thankyou Stripes for new info.

I use my own organic compost made the traditional way, they sure do love it.

Hi Dottly, I've never tried these in pots, but as they're a clump forming hardy perennial, I wouldn't think they would be particularly happy in containers, Derek.
