Can Mature Lavender Plants Be Moved now?

Answers

Ooooh - Jacque - I wouldn't risk it until the soil warms up a bit! Anyway, how big are the plants? That might be a problem - not sure they appreciate a move if they're really large.

If they're over 4 years old, they're coming up for replacement - which is usually necessary once they're five years old. If they're younger than that, I'd move 'em now as long as the ground's not frozen - but only if I could be sure I'd not break the rootballs and soil around them apart. Dig them out complete with soil round the rootball and transplant to new holes (that you've already dug out!) Make sure the soil is at the level it was before you moved them at the base of the plant.

I'm sure you're keen to get going, like all frustrated gardeners at this time of year, but remember it is a Mediterranean plant, and will not like to be disturbed while the ground is SO cold. Best to try and be patient, and wait till late March.

I agree, wait until after the last frost and you should be ok. How old are the plants? As long as you cut them back in September time every year then they should last at least 10 years and maybe 15. Sam
