I have grown a pinus pinea (stone/umbrella pine) in a 50 cm earthenware pot - now 5 ft tall!!
I am moving house soon and can plant it in the garden (if I can get it out of the pot!)
Is this a good idea and any tips!

But first make sure that the winter temps don't fall below -9.4ยบ C in your neighborhood. P. pinea is a Mediterranean native, and can't take as much frost as many other pines.

Thanks for these - we are moving to a more sheltered garden, and if it has survived the last two or three years in a relatively small pot I don't think I will have any problems!

I think your pinus would love to be planted in the garden, if necessary smash the pot to extract it. Probably better to wait until autumn now as hopefully there will be lots of hot sunshine over the next few months. Dig and prepare your planting hole unpot the pinus and plant with lots of good compost, don't plant it any deeper in the groundthan it is in the pot. Keep well watered after planting right through until spring of next year.
