I moved a clematis plant from pot to ground, but the ground after a while became water logged, & the plant seamed to be wilting. I moved it back into a bigger pot but it does not seam to be recovering, please see photo added.

The pot is 18" square, and the roots were water logged,
I left them a few days to dry out a bit and then started to water them again but I don't know if I should be seeing any improvement or I will have to wait until next year.

If the roots were really water logged you needed to leave for more than a few days to let the water drain. There are drainage holes in the pot and it is raised up on feet?

Yes the pot has holes, and I have raised it on bricks.

I would suggest you let the compost almost dry out before you water again. However, if the roots were waterlogged for a while the plant may already have died.

Cut it right down to about 6 inches. Repot deeply in John Innes 3 mixed with plenty of grit and DON'T OVERWATER!.
Put it in a sheltered spot, or a greenhouse if you have one and cross your fingers! You may just save it. I always say that plants have two choices: thrive - or not!

What size pot is the clematis in and are the roots being kept cool?
