Hi all, brain picking time again ! My daughter has an unidentified plant/weed that has appeared in her garden, she knows she didn't plant it. It is about 8ins tall at the moment and we think it looks rather nice..any ideas please ?

Well, it looks like a form of elder, sambucus nigra f. laciniata (fern-leafed elder), which does occasionally pop up. I have a huge tree of the same which sprouted behind my pond years ago. The way to tell - pinch off a small piece of leaf and crush it. Smell it. If it has a strong sort of earthy or rank smell, then it probably is elder. Let's do that bit first and we'll discuss further if it is!
