May I please have some help identifying this?

My first thought was Coltsfoot, tussilago farfara. That has a very finely toothed edge to the leaf but as these leaves are a bit damaged its hard to be sure. Also I don't know if they grow in the US. If there were yellow flowers with no leaves in Spring in the same place that would confirm it.
May be barking up the wrong tree altogether.

My thoughts were exactly the same as Steragram's.

Thank you for your answers. I planted a few pepper plants and this looked like something else. I am quite a novice. Is it a weed?

Snap, Stera, but don't lets carried away :-))))
Webstermon, in Britain it is a wild flower and, as such, it is very interesting. It grows in shady, moist places. I have never heard of it being grown as a garden plant - but why not? Weed - that is up to you. It is a European/Asiatic plant that was introduced to the USA and is a member of the Aster family (Wiki). Firstly, though, look it up on your web browser and see if you agree with our id.

My first thought was that it was a melon or squash of some kind. Did you use kitchen scraps as part of the basis for your compost?
