I am trying to find the name of a really common flowering plant which is in abundance at present-(my daughter says it grows like a weed in her garden and she doesn't know what it is!). The flowers are white, red and dark pink- these are on different stems- but mainly we have seen the dark pink. In Scarborough last week they were all over the place even growing out of walls. It's obviously a hardy plant. I feel sure it isn't sedum. The flower is spherical and leaves symmetrical, small, pointy and quite distinctive on the stem. The flower seems to bloom from this. There is no particular scent. I am now becoming obsessed with finding its name and have searched thro' my gardening books to no avail.

Centranthus ruber, or red valerian.

yes I'd go for valerian too. I cant get it to grow in my garden. it mocks me from my neighbour's garden who digs it out in bucket fulls.

I thought Valerian too . . . seems to fit the description.

A photo would be helpful - perhaps you could ask your daughter for one?
