No! Whether you need to water at all depends very much on soil type. I would say that with a clay (sub)soil you probably wouldn't need to water very often at all other than the newly planted. Sandy soil may need more watering but you should seek to improve its water holding capacity with humus and even by marling (adding clay).
Condition your plants to cope for themselves as their roots can usually seek the moisture from quite deep down. Heavily watered sappy plants will wilt as soon as you fail to give them enough water.

I never water the garden as such - just newly planted things until they are established and containers, of course. My soil is very light, but closely planted. Most things seem to cope perfectly well.

Plants growing in containers (ie. pots, baskets, troughs etc) are the ones I monitor closely, plus annuals and plants growing in a rain shadow near walls, hedges etc. They will be the first to flag if they are running short of water. Mine don't get watered every day in dry weather, but when I water I do it in the evening to give them a chance of a good drink overnight before it evaporates again.

Thank you to all the replies, confirms what I thought but gives me the confidence not to water when lots of people seem to have hoses out at the first sign of sun.

I haven't watered my garden at all yet, only the pots. If you have got annuals in your garden you probably need to water more. I understand if you don't really soak your borders, - the roots will stay on the surface and not establish the plants. I know of an allotment friend who doesn't even water her vegetables and they are fabulous. By the way my plants are lush.
