From your picture in the sun I can't tell if there's a lilac tint to the flower. B. forrestii is creamy, with the orange eye, and evergreen in mild localities.

Yes, there is a lilac tint as well as the orange, and it's evergreen. (Sorry about the quality of my pics - I'm hopeless even with a digital camera!) But I'll look up B. forrestti. This plant was thought to have died over last winter so was severely cut down. Then it recovered spectacularly. Moral: never give up on a plant until you're absolutely certain it's dead.
The plant I previously posted about, which we misguidely thought was a hydrangea but which turned out to be viburnam, really was dead and has been dug out. The cause of death remains a mystery.

I'm thinking of buddleja forrestii, the flower of which is similar, but the leaves of yours are too 'normal'.
