Lettuce - same old same old
For the last 3 years I've stuck to the same lettuce every year e.g. Winter Density during the cold weather, Rocket, which my daughter likes but I don't, lolla Rosso which is good and another that I've forgotten the name of.
They've all grown very well but I'm ready for a different variety, something more crisp etc. Any suggestions ? What are your favourites ?

Sorry Lizzie would never grow Little Gem far to bitter... Bulba and I grow the salad leaves which means you pick some of the growing leaves and let the rest keep growing. Other than that try Cos lettuce though that too, in my opinion is bitter.

MG, thought Bulba ate bird cherries, so cos lettuce and Little Gem are surely easy on his taste buds! Is he in from hoovering?

I grow a lot of lettuces of different varieties. Some varieties become bitter, if left to grow old and not watered regularly. It also depends on the dressing you add to your salad. Iceberg is our favourite. Clean firm heads with no little slugs or green fly in between leeves, if you are vegeterian!

Costas if you wash your lettuce or salad leaves then there will be no slugs or bugs in them. Worthy... bird cherries? I hardly think so we used to have a wonderful gean but had to have it cut down years ago.

Hello Moon Grower. You tell this to my wife. Even with the very clean lettuces, she washes them 5 times in a big bowl adding plenty of salt and venegar in the water. Then checks all leaves one by one holding them against the light. If one fly is found everything goes straight into bin. Is this normal or mental? When I disagree she calls me dirty.......something.

Well half the time I forget to wash the leaves at all! Just pick them give them a shake and on to the plate. I also confess to eating a biscuit with my mug of tea in the garden without washing my hands - doesn't seem to bother my body.

Thanks for your suggestions, different lettuce for me henceforth. Salad leaves, Cos and iceberg all sound good.

I find Little Gem very good, they don't grow as tight packed as the bought ones, but are very nice.
