I have a plant in my garden which stands about 5ft tall with very large leaves up to 16x12". It has spiky yellow flowers with yellow centres. Last year it stayed closer to the ground but didn't flower and survived the winter. As far as I know I didn't plant it. The very large leaves are the unusual feature. Any ideas?

Ligularia? I think we'd need a picture. Style of each individual flower would help immensely, as would the leaf shape

I thought verbascum too.

It sounds like Inula magnifica if by spiky flowers you mean many petalled daisies with a large yellow central disc. I can show a photo of the very large leaves and the flowers if you can't find it by googling.

Those leaves are big, though. We need a picture. Look up our suggestions and let us know

I have added photos to my page now of both the flowers and the leaves.

Not verbascum then!

Could it be a mullien (Verbascum) of some description ? Are the leaves covered in a silver/grey fluff ?
