I was given a very young wild cherry tree as a wedding favour last August. It is growing in a pot but I am not sure how to look after it now until it is ready to plant out.

Some councils or local conservation area like locally grown trees if your garden is too small for it, birds love the fruit

Thank you both very much for your reply. I'll keep watering for the moment.

Better in the ground than in a pot. However, until you decide where it's going, just keep it watered. Not choosy plants, they grow in almost any soil, although neutral to alkali ground's best for them (clay or chalk). It will quickly outgrow the pot, so if you do wait until autumn, bear in mind its ultimate size (they aren't best pruned, although it can be done), as they'll reach 35 - 40ft. 20ft after 10 years easily.
