Why have I got grass growing in my borders - is this from my lawnmower blowing out grass whilst cutting? If so how do I mow near to the borders without this happening?

Like most plants, grass can grow from seeds. If grass grows tall enough it will make seeds.
But grass is also able to grow a special kind of extra stem that reaches through the ground, digging through the dirt, to start a new set of roots and a new grass plant. This stem will feed the new grass plant until it can survive on its own. So even without seeds, new grass will grow.

That is very interesting, and I suppose that is why grass is so good for lawns and why couch is such a pest...

A Stollen is a fruit cake containing dried fruit and often marzipan and covered with sugar, powdered sugar or icing sugar.
Wish they grew in our borders!

Thinking about it, perhaps it is a good job they don't grow on trees, I would be very overweight.

Now then GM scientists - how about getting to work on that one?

Stolons grow over the soil surface, as in bent grass and strawberry runners, while rhizomes grow underground, as in Kentucky bluegrass or comfrey.

I thought Kentucky bluegrass was a type of country music?

lol Myron! Tugb. I 'think' that is how grass propagates... at least that is what I have understood (even if my lap top decided to talk about a cake!)

I think we are talking couch grass here, bless its little buttons, not. Not all grass does that thank goodness.

Grass always grows in my borders, Marji. I think the grass just seeds naturally, and the border offers a nice comfortable home! I doubt if it's simply a result of lawnmower action.
