I am keen to buy a water butt pump to enable me to water the garden pots via a hose from the submerged pump. I cannot find a system that will shut the pump on and off when used in conjunction with a watering gun, the hose has to be "free flow" with all the brands that I have looked at.
Can anyone help ?

You could try using a plug in timer... The type that's used to switch a table lamp off and on to deter burglars, etc.
The mechanical type are very cheap and will usually give you something like two on/off switch cycles in any one 24 hour period.
I believe that the digital controlled programmable timers enable you to have more control over how many times a day and at what times you switch the pump on and off.
