We planted Graham thomas climbing rose last year. It flowered beautifully this year but it then shrivelled up. I fed it in the hope that it would recover. Since then I have cut it right down. Such a pity. Just wondering why - it happened with the rose we had there before too. Should I dig it up and put fresh earth in and then replant? Grateful for advice. The photo was taken earlier this year.

Graham Thomas is a lovely rose but I never thought it was a climber. I grow mine in a large pot and it flowers from June through to the autumn. Beautiful scent too. I would cut it back fairly hard change the soil...as much as you can....but if you can plant it where no other rose has been for several years much the better.

Might the cause of the problem be that where you have it planted there is a foundation for the wall below the surface of the soil. I know I've tried to grow a few things near one of my walls and was finding similar (although not roses) with plants doing ok for a bit then dying. Roses have very deep roots and they may be hindered by what's below.

You should never put a rose where a rose has been before, the soil won't be suitable. You could dig this one up and put lots of fresh soil from somewhere that hasn't had roses growing in it and that should help.
Have a read of this, it might help explain what's going on:
