Is there a variety of potato that can be planted about now and ready in time for Christmas?

Bulba and I tried this once and it was a total waste of time and money. If you go along to any GC you'll find them on sale but - buyer beware!

Sort of related .... I realise the question might be asked in the context of the pleasure of having home grown potatoes for Christmas (in my day it was a tangerine in your stocking but each to his own, as they say!) but.... Do potatoes freeze well? Could the answer to homegrown for Christmas be to grow as normal, harvest and freeze them? I know we get frozen chips but that's a commercial process and whole potatoes tend to be a different shape & size to whole potatoes.

I have far too many spuds, I set just 7 Pentland Javelin but only I eat them, giving loads away.
So how to store them is my question too.
Next year I'm going to grow 2 firsts, 2 seconds and 2 main crops, but it's taken 4 years to realise this ! Oh dear !

Yes you can freeze them Urbanite, though I have never tried will simply store them in the potting shed in hessian sacks.

When I had too many I scraped them, diced them, part boiled 5 mins in the microwave, drained, then fried them gently in a little Olive Oil sprinkled with dried mixed herbs.
Froze them on a tray, then bagged up for the freezer. A bit of a nuisance, but they were lovely used direct onto the plate and warmed up. They were organic, which supermarket products are not.

Ours are too Diane - BUT you can buy organic potatoes in most places now.

Call them Easter Potatoes and you may be happier. At
25p each they are expensive. I only got marbles. There were a lot of complaints about them last year. Think the
GCs were getting on the Christmas sales bandwaggon. Remember to cover with several layers of fleece if they are in the greenhouse. Think I will buy just 2 and leave them
until Easter before 'harvesting.'
