I have two sambucca bushes planted side by side in my shade garden for 6 years plus. This spring one died....leaves turn brown and then died. Now the other is dead. Why is this happening?

The only thing really possible is that they've dried out. Elder loves the sun, never as good flowering under trees. I wonder, did they have to compete for water, and lose? It is a shrub of high nitrogen sites, especially where people or rabbits have been/are. Although it is best in the sun, as a hedgerow shrub, or woodland margin small tree, it doesn't want to dry out at the roots.
