Hi Lynda, all hardy annuals can be grown from seed without a greenhouse, just sow the seed where you want them to flower, just prepare the ground to a fine tilth, so that the seed is actually in contact with the soil, there are also a large number of perennials that can be grown from seed without a greenhouse, but for some you may need something like a cold frame, for a bit of winter protection in the first year, Derek.

There are lots of seeds you could start on your windowsills indoors, then move them outside after the frosts. I don't have a greenhouse either but have done this successfully many times.

Are there any plants in particular that you are wondering about?

They don't have to be annuals, many perennials can be grown from seed without a greenhouse.

Hardy annuals can be sown directly where to flower in the spring.
I sowed double calendula in long troughs and they have made a lovely show
