As a suggestion the spring bulbs are coming in the shops so plant crocus and miniature daffodils, then something like pansies or violas for colour

How small is very small, and could you say if the soil is heavy or light and a bit sandy, and is it usually nice and moist or does it dry out easily? All these will affect the best choices for your plot. Agree you can't go wrong with spring bulbs for starters though.
