Can you recommend a fast growing tree for a south facing spot, to plant against a wall. The garden is overlooked & we are looking for a tree sparce at the bottom & lots of foliage at the top?

Eucalyptus, Paulowina, Trachycarpus and Amelanchier Lamrckii come to mind.

Most trees are fairly slow, but you could try Eleagnus 'Quicksilver' which gets very bushy. It's more often grown as a shrub, but doesn't mind being pruned, so you could keep cutting back the lower branches (technical term: raising the crown)!
Whitebeam grows fairly fast but gets huge.
