I am better at growing veg than flowers and shrubs so quite inexperienced. Can anyone tell me what type of soil I have if Delphiniums, Lupins, Echinacea and Michaelmass daisies thrive? I am clearing out the border and want to plant shrubs.

Probably neutral to slightly alkaline, cos that's what delphiniums like, but, for a rough guide, have a look round your neighbourhood to see what grows - if anyone's got hydrangeas and they're blue, then the soil's acid - if they're pink, it's alkaline, if they're a mix of the two colours, neutral. Delphiniums also like fertile soil, so if yours are doing well, the soil is probably good.
