Get right under it and pull away the oldest leaves, if they won't pull off, leave them til another time or trim them with secateurs. If you want to reduce the clump, then get an old bread knife and carve off portions. This only works temporariliy, as they will grow back to the same size in a year. Also, cut out any old flower stems.
